Traveling to Thailand last minute

Many people nowadays end up choosing only a regular flight ticket when traveling to Thailand. This is true for people flying not only to Bangkok but also Chang Mai, Phuket International Airport as well as Koh Samui Airport.

This is an option that is always available for the more adventurous travelers among us, who want to experience things more as they come rather than having a resort or similar already booked up in advance. You really do not have to be a diehard backpacker to travel in this fashion, at least not in Thailand. It is very easy to get around the country. Remember that tourism is one of Thailand’s greatest sources of income and many of the Thai people are in the tourism business for this particular reason.

Buying only a flight seat leaves you with many opportunities once you arrive. You may either purchase an additional ticket to somewhere else straight at the ticket counter, or you can go into town for a couple of days and arrange for the different land transportation that are available; bus, minivan, train and so on.

If you are arriving in Bangkok you are faced with a few options. You may elect to travel north right away to experience the rain forest around Chang Mai. There are many jungle treks to choose from, spanning over a few days up to a week or more depending on your ability. Mahouts - or elephant trainers - are also available. Elephant rides are a lot of fun, just remember that they can be rather smelly and always speak to more than one guide center to make sure you are paying the correct price and get to see the best sites.

The other option is to go south towards the islands and beaches. You may either hop on a domestic Bangkok Air flight straight to Phuket International and catch a ferry to the western islands from there, or you can arrange with a train or bus towards Surathani to connect with the eastern islands.

Whatever you choose to do, this is a more liberating and way of traveling and experiencing your holiday. Many times guides and other resort employees on buses, trains and ferries will tell you that all bungalows and resorts are fully booked up and that the only option you have is to book a room with them. Do not fall for this never ending scam! I have been traveling in Thailand many times for months at a time and have never failed to get a roof over my head, not even for a single night. Instead, politely decline and just explain that you will try your chances. You must, however, be prepared to walk around for a bit, so a regular Samsonite suitcase is perhaps not the best option to bring along.

From Phuket you are able to connect to Krabi, Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta and many other beautiful islands. Surathani connects you to Koh Phangan, Koh tao and Koh Samui (which also has an airport on the island). Traveling this way will save you a lot of money, as well as give you a more proper experience of Thailand and the culture, but I admit it is not for everyone.
